🔋 Basics about LiPo batteries
LiPo=lithium polymer battery
Widely used in the RC sector due to high energy density, low weight and high current output
Cells are connected in series:
1S=1 cell=3.7 V nominal voltage (full: 4.2 V)
2S=2 cells in series=7.4 V nominal voltage (full: 8.4 V)
charging parameters
| Charging parameters | 1S LiPo | 2S LiPo |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal voltage | 3,7 V | 7,4 V |
| Final charging voltage | 4,2 V | 8,4 V |
| Charging current | Max. 1C* | Max. 1C* |
| Balancer necessary? | No (only 1 cell) | Yes (cell equalisation important) |
* 1C means: Charging current=battery capacity.
Example: 2000 mAh battery → 2000 mA=2 A charging current (at 1C)
chargers
1. Important: Only use LiPo-compatible chargers!
Pay attention to:
Adjustable number of cells (e.g. 1S, 2S etc.)
Balancer connection (necessary from 2S)
Adjustable charging current
2. For 1S LiPo:
Simple charging without balancer
Many chargers with USB connection or via JST connector
Voltage never above 4.2 V
3. For 2S LiPo:
Use balancer connection!
Balancer equalises cell voltages → prevents overcharging of individual cells
Important for battery life and safety
🔥 Safety when charging
LiPos are sensitive and can catch fire if handled incorrectly. Therefore:
✅ Dos
Always charge under supervision
Use a charging bag or fireproof box
Never charge above 4.2 V/cell
Do not deep discharge batteries (< 3.0 V/cell=harmful!)
Keep an eye on the battery temperature (should be no more than lukewarm)
❌ Don'ts
Never charge damaged or bloated batteries
Do not use cheap no-name chargers
Do not charge unattended
Do not fast charge above the manufacturer's recommendation (e.g. >1C) without authorisation
🔧 Additional tips from the RC sector
Use storage mode if you are not using the battery for a longer period of time (approx. 3.8 V/cell)
Check cell voltages regularly (with LiPo checker or charger)
Work with cut-off when driving: Set the controller so that it switches off at 3.2-3.4 V/cell
Ensure good plug quality and cable cross-section (especially with 2S for brushless setups)
