Handling LiPo batteries
Handling lithium polymer batteries (LiPo batteries) in RC model building requires care and specific measures to ensure safety, performance and longevity. Once you have selected the right batteries for your application, we have summarized the most important aspects and tips for safe handling:
1. Storage
Temperature: It is best to store LiPo batteries at room temperatures of approx. 15-25 °C. Never place the batteries in direct sunlight.
Charge level: LiPo batteries should be stored at around 50-70% charge (storage mode) to prevent cell damage. NEVER store your battery fully charged - this will certainly destroy your battery (inflates).
Safety: Use fireproof containers or LiPo safes to minimize the risk of fire. Safety is paramount, especially in your own home. At the very least, you should ALWAYS store your batteries in a LiPo Safebag. In the event of a fire, this will minimize the jet of flame that can (and will) come out of the burning battery.
2. Charging
Charger: Only use special LiPo chargers that support cell monitoring and balancing. In our store you will find many charging stations in all price ranges. We will be happy to advise you. When using a charger in combination with a power supply unit, make sure that the power supply unit meets the requirements of the charger (current output in amperes).
Charging current: Charge with the manufacturer's recommended current (usually 1C, where "C" denotes the capacity in amperes). From our practical experience, the optimum charging current for a 2S LiPo battery is between 8 and 12 amps. We do not recommend higher charging currents and they make virtually no sense.
Supervision: Never charge the batteries unattended. The battery should always be placed on a non-flammable surface when charging and ALWAYS be stored in a LiPo Safebag. You can of course find a LiPo Safebag in our range.
Avoid damage: Avoid overcharging (>4.2 V per cell) or deep discharging (<3.0 V per cell), as this shortens the service life and can be dangerous. High-voltage batteries (4.3 V per cell) can theoretically also be fully charged to 8.6 V. However, as only 8.4V is permitted in all competitions, we always recommend a cut-off voltage of 8.4V when charging.
3. Utilization
Load limits: Make sure that the battery can handle the current load of the model (observe C-rate).
Temperature: Avoid overheating. Temperatures above 60 °C can damage the battery.
Avoid deep discharge: Use a voltage monitor or telemetry to ensure that the voltage does not fall below 3.0 V per cell. If you are training for a race at the racetrack, we recommend that you only ride for as long as you do during the race (5-7 minutes).
4. Inspection and care
Visual inspection: Check your LiPo batteries regularly for damage, swelling or leaks. Swollen (bloated) batteries must no longer be used.
Cleaning: Keep the contacts clean and avoid short circuits.
Service life: LiPo batteries have a limited number of charging cycles (typically 300-500 cycles). Replace old or weak batteries in good time.
5. Disposal
Discharge: Discharge the battery completely before disposal (3.3 - 3.5V per cell)
Recycling: Take the battery to a collection point for hazardous waste or recycling to avoid environmental damage. Disposal in normal household waste is strictly prohibited.
Summary
LiPo batteries are powerful, but require responsible handling. Proper storage and charging as well as responsible use and care will ensure safety and maximize service life. Improper handling can not only damage the batteries, but can also cause dangerous situations (fire).
